Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

When you come in to see your provider at Wynantskill Family Medicine for gynecology care, they focus on your reproductive and pelvic organ health. These appointments include annual well-woman exams, in addition to diagnosing and treating issues, such as:

  • STDs
  • Yeast infections
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Incontinence
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Menopause

The Wynantskill Family Medicine team also provides education about birth control options.

What does a routine gynecology appointment involve?

Your annual well-woman exam is an important part of your gynecological health. These routine exams include a clinical breast exam, pelvic exam, and any screenings ordered by your provider, which may include a mammogram or Pap smear.

Gynecological exams should begin in a woman’s teen years when her body starts to change during puberty. The first visit offers the opportunity to establish a patient/doctor relationship that allows time to address concerns or questions about menstruation, sexuality, or any unusual pelvic symptoms. Pelvic exams aren’t typically performed until you reach the age of 21.

What screenings does gynecology care offer?

When you come in for your well-woman exam, you can expect to have a routine Pap smear. During your pelvic exam, your provider takes a sample of cells from your cervix and sends it to a lab for analysis. If your results come back abnormal, it doesn’t mean you have cancer. You simply need to undergo additional testing to investigate your cells.

You may also have an in-office ultrasound that can identify the source of issues, like irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, or polycystic ovary syndrome.

Mammograms take an X-ray picture of your breast to detect early signs of breast cancer. These screenings are one of the best ways to find cancer early since sometimes it can take up to three years before you can feel it.

In some cases, you might need other screenings that include diagnostic urine or blood testing to confirm or rule out certain health concerns.
