Women’s Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health is the branch of medicine dedicated to women’s specific health care needs. Women’s health care revolves around addressing reproductive, sexual, and general health. Many conditions can be diagnosed and treated in women’s health, including infections, certain forms of cancer, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Women’s health at Wynantskill Family Medicine can also involve menopause treatments, pelvic exams and checkups, Pap smears, STD testing, and contraception for women looking to prevent pregnancy.

What does a women’s health exam include?

A women’s health exam or well-woman exam is an important part of your overall health care. During the exam, your provider performs several assessments.

Pelvic exam

During a pelvic exam, your provider examines the health of your vulva, cervix, vagina, uterus, and ovaries. Testing for STDs often occurs during the pelvic exam. This part of the exam allows your to detect any issues or concerns with your sexual or reproductive health.

Physical exam

During the physical exam, your provider checks your general appearance, your vitals, your lungs, and your heart. They use this part of the exam to determine the status of your overall health. It’s also a great time to mention any changes or concerns you have regarding your health.

Breast exam

During the breast exam, your provider feels for lumps and abnormalities in your breast and under your arms. The breast exam can be used to detect breast cancer and other breast-related conditions.

Pap smear

A Pap smear is a women’s health care test that’s routinely performed during your pelvic exam. Pap smears test for any signs of cervical cancer.

Staying on top of your regular women’s health exams allows the Wynantskill Family Medicine team to detect issues with your reproductive, sexual, or general health as early as possible.

Annual well-woman exams are recommended, but there are other times when you might need care, such as for a UTI or yeast infection.

What are some of the most common conditions affecting women?

Some of the health issues unique to women include symptoms associated with menopause and conditions of the female organs, such as fibroids, cervical cancer, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Some conditions common to both men and women can affect them in a different way or at a disproportionate rate. For example, STDs are often more serious for women. And women are more likely to experience osteoarthritis (a condition of weakening bones) and urinary tract infections.

At Wynantskill Family Medicine, the team provides exceptional women’s health care, no matter your condition. Call the office or schedule an appointment online today.
